Description

Entry for the arctic dragon contest on a group. :elite-dragon-artists.deviantar…:

The Arctic Wyrmm is a subspecies of middle-rank dragonoid that migrated North. (Lower being non-fire breathers, non-ancients, etc. Higher being elementals and/or capable of learning other languages).

Unlike the ice dragons, it is not elemental, while has the ability to breathe fire like most draconic speices

They are very adaptable as a creature that is not native to their environment, through both natural and mystical means: their ancient dragon genes allow them to carry a sense of what needs to be evolved first to survive, secondary means by nature that slowly develop.

The Arctic Wyrmm mates for life.  Through sexual dimorphism (gender-based physical difference: deer vary via antlers, etc) the female is most adapted to life closer to water and ice, as it is wingless, slender and has ability to swim more effeciently than the male, which is most suited to the inner land life and bears more muscle mass. When young are on the way, the male with travel farther inland to hunt different game, including bison and caribou. The female will hunt seals, trapped narwhals and sick or injured polar bears (Which are seen as competition).

The wings on the male are not used for flight, rather for scaring off other predators from its mate and brood, as well as competition. They are also used as secondary weapons as needed, if taking down large prey and to show off during mating season.  When opened, the wings show red streaks to warn, which stand out against the snow.

Through combined hunting skills a pair can gather a variety of food, when conditions for one or the other are harsh.

Both genders feature padded feet to avoid excessive noise, walking on snow, and to avoid ice damage. The female's tail is stronger than the male's for swimming usage as well as a weapon.

Fur is concentrated in areas that require the most heating. The body is not protruding many detail for minimal heat loss.

Life span is about 200 years, matures at 30 to ensure the new species can survive. Due to lack of interest in pursuing other predator's territory once established, and having only up to three offspring at a time every 3 years, it is not considered a real threat. The Arctic Wyrmm is considered to be of fair/average intelligence of minor dragonic species, and has the ability to nurture their young for 2-10 years before letting them go on their own.  Male offspring however are not welcome back to their birth territory once they mature, the father will consider them another territorial male, driving the sons off.

The Arctic Wyrmm's size is approxx that of a rhinoceros, and is generally docile but territorial if threatened. Their fire is most heavily used when creating themselves a shelter if not readily available.

Originally did it in watercolour and pen, had some issues and did further colouring in photoshop.
